We as humans are created to have different opinions, these opinions help make our decisions in life. As expressed throughout the lecture based on the short story Hills like White Elephants, the themes conveyed, express a deeper meaning based on abortion. Throughout the lecture, the pros, cons, themes, and symbols were expressed in great detail. A variety of the pros elaborated in the lecture consist of: the chance of a woman being raped, poverty for the family, the physical state of the child, as well as if the child were to believed to cause physical harm for the mother. On the contrary, there are a variety of cons associated with the political issue being that of abortion. For instance some cons include using abortion as a form of birth control, the moral ethics associated with abortion, also abortion being used as a form of murder, lastly using abortion for needed government assistance. Although abortion is a complicated decision and there are many plausible reasons for one to get an abortion, I am a firm believer in the idea that abortion is detrimental for women and society as well.
With the various reasons explained in class as to why abortion is detrimental, I have gained more knowledge on the topic of abortion. Either choosing the side of abortion being free choice or not, the decision is always based on one’s opinions, and no matter what the decision will always be a life changing decision. However, majority of the time the decisions on abortion are not easily swayed to the opposite side. The topic of abortion evokes strong emotions from me, and as a result of the lecture, I have gained more insight on the opposite side’s views and opinions.
Throughout the short story Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway the expressed themes are portrayed based on abortion, and decision making. Two major themes expressed throughout the short story are that of making others happy, as well as life changing decisions. When in a relationship and confronted with the difficult decision whether to have a child or not, the decision will always hurt either one’s self or their partner. No matter what the overall choice is, the decision will be life altering. Hills like White Elephants was one of my favorite short stories which I read throughout this semester. The main idea was never expressed in the story, but created a hidden meaning leaving some mystery throughout the extended metaphor. The mystery made me yearn to know the overall ending decision which Jig is forced to make. Although I have never been in the situation Jig was confronted with, I know various people some at my age, as well as some older and younger, whom were confronted with the difficult decision of having the child or to abort it. This topic evokes strong emotions from me due to the personal connection not that I have with Jig but with her American friend who will support any decision made.
